Halloween
Not a single trick-or-treater ever came to my parents’ house when I was a kid. They live at the top of a steep hill, on a street without sidewalks, and it was a beautiful, wild place to grow up, just not exactly Halloween-festivity friendly. But that did not stop me from falling in love with the holiday, and its sister holiday, Día de Muertos. We celebrated both in school, and I got plenty of candy by going trick-or-treating with friends who lived in a different neighborhood.
This year, I am hoping a few trick-or-treaters will ring our doorbell. We haven’t quite figured out our costumes yet, but I do know that I plan on baking One-Bowl Brownies from The Newlywed Table to share with our adult neighbors. And we’ll have individually wrapped candy set on a platter on our front steps for any little ghouls and goblins.
If you’re looking for some ways to celebrate Halloween, how about cooking a pumpkin? Or making a batch of homemade vanilla extract? With the stress of next week’s election, you might just want a drink. I hope you have a spooky, relaxing weekend. Remember to vote, vote, vote!
