5 British-isms to Know

For my work adapting British books for American readers, I keep a running list of words and phrases that need to be changed. Favourite should become favorite, of course. And savour, flavour, humour, neighbour, splendour, and colour lose their u’s, too. There are also some lesser known and infrequently used words, and every so often I come across a new-to-me British-ism to add to my list. Here are five to impress your friends across the pond:

1. aubergine / eggplant

2. mangetout / snow peas

3. faff / ineffectual effort

4. kitchen paper / paper towels

5. moreish / so delicious that you crave just one more bite
