Spring 2020 Releases: Part 3

This is the third (and final!) in a series of posts highlighting spring 2020 cookbooks. Now is a fantastic time to buy books, and it’s easy to do so without leaving your home; you can support local independent bookstores by shopping online with Bookshop.

So many excellent books were published this spring that I can hardly keep up with reading them all! Full disclosure: I haven’t finished all of these, but I still feel confident recommending them based on what I have read and what others have said, too.

1. Everything Is Under Control by Phyllis Grant:

The sub-genre of “memoir with recipes” is one of my all-time favorites. I’ve been looking forward to reading this book for quite a while. Graham got the first crack at it and he powered through the first eighty-five pages in a single night before bed. Now that’s an endorsement.

2. Eat a Peach by David Chang with Gabe Ulla:

There’s a moment in the middle of this memoir when I thought it was ruined for me. (I don’t want to spoil it for you, so I won’t give more details.) But then, in a surprising turn of events, the last page addresses that moment head on, with the clarity and added wisdom of hindsight. I ended up loving it. (NB: There are no recipes in this book and I was lucky to get my hands on an advance copy; it doesn’t publish until fall.)

3. Always Home by Fanny Singer:

I recently heard someone refer to Fanny Singer as the Chelsea Clinton of the Bay Area, which feels true in many ways. In this memoir, she shares her culinary coming-of-age story. I’m excited to learn more about her as a person, and not necessarily only as Alice Waters’ daughter.

4. Chocolate Is Forever and Cookies Are Magic by Maida Heatter:

Maida Heatter was the author of several beloved books on desserts and baking. She was also inducted into the James Beard Foundation’s Hall of Fame—no big deal! Her tried-and-true recipes are thoughtfully captured in these two books, as well as in a third, Happiness Is Baking, which was published last year by the wonderful people of Voracious Books.
