Sesame, a Tiny Bakery
Over the weekend, we went to visit a new bakery in town. Sesame, a tiny bakery, occupies the little corner space adjacent to the now-open South Berkeley location of The Kebabery. Marykate McGoldrick was the pastry chef at Camino until its closure in 2018, but she joined after I finished writing the cookbook, so I never had the chance to meet her. However, I loved her cake pop-ups and the way she used minimal sugar and maximal seasonal fruits.
Graham and I sat on a bench in the sunshine and split a slice of strawberry cake frosted with black sesame buttercream. We waited patiently for a batch of apricot crumble cookies to come out of the oven. When they were ready (and still warm!), we brought four of them home to share with our friends Natalie and Terrell. I wish I had a picture of the cookies to show you—they were outstanding! I guess we’ll just have to go back for more.
